Days on the Hill 2014 – Dentists Meet Parliamentarians on NIHB, Seniors Issues

A CDA contingent of 11 dentists, including President Dr. Gary MacDonald and President-Elect Dr. Alastair Nicoll, participated in the 2014 CDA’s annual Days on the Hill event. This year’s meeting focused on the Non-Insured Health Benefits program (NIHB) of Health Canada and the oral health care needs of veterans in long-term care facilities, in addition to prescription drug issues and the need for support for oral health research.

CDA representatives met with the Minister of Health, Hon. Rona Ambrose, as well NDP Leader Thomas Mulcair and Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau to make their case. Teams of dentists also met with officials in the Prime Minister’s Office, with senior officials within the NIHB Branch at Health Canada, with members of the Parliamentary Standing Committees on Health and on Aboriginal Affairs, and with other relevant MPs and Senators.

OSAP Launches Online MERS Toolkit

In response to recent reports of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) cases in the U.S., the Organization for Safety, Asepsis and Prevention (OSAP) has developed an online toolkit specifically for oral healthcare professionals.

The online kit is designed to bring dental professionals up to speed on a disease that has only recently begun to make headlines in the U.S. The kit contains:

  • Links to CDC recommendations for prevention and control of MERS
  • Best clinical practices for preventing the spreading of MERS
  • A “talking points” script for front office for addressing early identification and possible deferral of patients with flu-like symptoms
  • Links to videos, articles and research related to MERS

The toolkit will also feature ongoing updates that keep readers informed of future developments concerning the disease.

The MERS Toolkit is accessible free of charge to all dental professionals here.

Case Video Presentation: Thinking out of the ‘bracket’… Is partial orthodontic treatment acceptable?

This case was presented by Dr. Asef Karim.

One of the risks and potential sequela of fixed orthodontic treatment is the shortening of roots commonly known as orthodontically induced inflammatory root resorption (OIIRR). In its severest form, OIIRR can cause tooth mobility and can compromise the long-term prognosis of teeth.
